Over 35 Social Soccer Tournament promotes ‘Unity through Diversity’

MOUNTAIN Rise Astro hosted its second Social Soccer Tournament on Sunday, November 10 with teams from Benoni, Vereeniging, Ladysmith, Stanger, Verulam, Durban, Port Shepstone and eight teams from Pietermaritzburg participating in the tournament.

The aim of this tournament was to create unity and brotherhood between the different towns. All games played were on a social level and there was no point system or log positions used.

The Organising Committee, led by Mohamed Patel, said that this Social Soccer Tournament has become a major annual event in Pietermaritzburg and one that is creating a positive image of our City.

The committee was overwhelmed by the response received from the various towns.

In 2017, eight teams in total participated and this year a total of 18 teams entered the tournament. There were in excess of 250 people who attended the event.

Apart from the talent and soccer skills on show, the highlight of the day was a braai which allowed players to forge new friendships, and some to catch up on the old ones.

The prize at the end of the day was “Unity Through Diversity”.

Patel expressed his gratitude and congratulated the organising committee, which included Zak Rawat, Tariq Osman, Naiem Mohammed, and Riaz Ahmed. He further thanked all players, coaches, supporters and everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s tournament.
