PMB Spurs to start league without Erwee

PIETERMARITZBURG Spurs will get their Dolphins Premier League campaign under way next week without one of their marquee signings, local star Sarel Erwee.

The first edition of the T20 competition will be played in Pietermaritzburg and Durban, and is set to get going next weekend.

Erwee and Athi Maphosa were among the Dolphins players who were signed by Spurs during the auction that took place at Kingsmead Stadium in June. Erwee is currently on tour of India with the South Africa A side, and according to Spurs coach Devon James, he is only expected back in the country next month.

“SJ Erwee is only back on the first week of September so he will probably only be available on the last round,” said James.

“It’s going to be tough without him, I know, but I think it gives a good platform for the younger guys to showcase their skills and that’s going to be my approach to them to not feel any pressure but not have any fear. I want these guys to express themselves.

“I’ve got a lot of good Premier League club players who have now to put their hands up and say ‘you’ve actually walked past me before but I have been chosen and this is my chance to shine and this what I can do’.”

Spurs are actually not only missing the Pietermaritzburg resident Erwee, but a lot of other players as well and the coach admits that hasn’t made their preparation easy.

“It’s a bit difficult because all the guys are away. I’ve got some guys who have duties in England and India. I have got a few players that are in Richards Bay,” said James.

“There are four or five guys that are coming in on Thursday [tomorrow] afternoon.”

James also confirmed that Jason Biddulph will captain the side in the T20 competition.
