Table tennis players shine

MORGAN Govindsamy from Pietermaritzburg and Anwar Osman from Durban, both members of the Dusi Table Tennis Club, took part in the Savetts Veterans Open Tournament over the weekend, winning gold and silver respectively.

Hosted annually, Govindsamy said that this year’s table tennis tournament attracted numerous new players.

Both Govindsamy and Osman competed in the over 50 and 60 divisions. Both players did well in over 50 division, with Osman making it to the last 16 while Govindsamy was knocked out in the quarter finals.

However, they had more luck in the doubles edition of the tournament, reaching the semi-finals together.

Osman and Govindsamy met each other in the finals of the over 60 division, having beat fancied Gauteng players Simon Dimant and Kobus Heins.

The final was a thrilling affair and Govindsamy came out number one with Osman running out of steam in the end. Playing a fully-fledged attacking game, Govindsamy beat Osman 3-0.

Govindsamy, who runs the table tennis club in Northdale, said that it was a very successful tournament and emphasised that anyone wanting to participate in the sport should contact him on 082 898 7271 as the Dusi Table Tennis Club offers free training.
