Walk of hope this Women’s Day

WOMEN, children and men are all invited for this year’s fifth edition of the Walk of Hope which seeks to raise awareness for human trafficking on August 9.

The walk which started as an initiative held on Women’s Day since 2014 has seen immense growth and been taken on by organisations in Kokstad and Cape Town, with Pretoria also joining in on the walk this year.

All proceeds from the walk are donated to the Freedom Climb project which works solely against human trafficking by Operation Mobilisation which is a global organisation.

“In 2015 the walk gained momentum and close to 200 women rallied from Linpark High School through the scenic forest trail route. Funds raised were given to a local shelter for abused women as well as towards children’s programmes,” said one of the organisers of the walk, Shannon Lawrence. With local NGO Breakthru Community Action (BCA) in its 10th year since beginning, the organisation hopes to continue to raise awareness for abused women and unite them with one voice against violence.

“The day promises to be fun-filled with entertainment for the children and others who will not be part of the 4 km or 8 km walk,” promised Lawrence.

The race kicks off at Linpark High School 8 am with prize giving and children’s entertainment until 1.30 pm.Tickets are available at R130 per person at www.webtickets.co.za or at the event from 7 am. Call 033 3941 546 for details.
