Callies to host table tennis championships

CALLIES Table Tennis Club will be hosting the 2018 Open Championships in the Selley Hall at the Feather Market Centre on Saturday, August 11.

Since 2014 the championships have shown tremendous growth, drawing players from Cape Town, Oudtshoorn, George, Knysna, Komani, Mthatha, Grahamstown, East London and many surrounding areas.

In a recent statement, the club said, “This year we have already received entries from Gauteng for the first time in many years.

“We once again expect a bumper entry, especially the juniors.”

The event is registered with the South African Table Tennis Board and points are accordingly allocated to the players for the national rankings. This is a big draw card for players to compete.

“The participation of junior players has increased tremendously in the past few years and we remain focused in ensuring that this continues.

“Firstly, this is due to our development projects in schools and rural areas and the ever increasing hunger for the up-and-coming players from the other regions to compete against others in a tournament like the Callies Championships.”

The championship categories will be senior men’s singles and doubles, senior women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles, junior boys’ singles, junior girls’ singles and junior doubles.

The tournament will commence at 08:30 and is a one-day event. Spectators are welcome. Entry is free. For more info contact Jay Bhoola at 082 703 6461.
