BAY residents will soon be able to enjoy the wholesome delights of a regular farmers’ market when the first Organic and Fresh Food Market comes to Baakens Valley during November.
Envisioned as a sustainable food market, with an emphasis on organic, naturally grown and free-range options, the aim is to bring quality, farm-fresh produce to urban-dwellers.
This is according to organiser Elsje Smuts, who will run the first of these monthly markets at the Chicky’s Yard venue on November 24.
“We want this to become a sustainable market that helps people reconnect with the joys of simple living and fresh, locally produced food. While the market will initially be held once a month, the plan is for it to become a weekly Saturday morning market, along the lines of the Wild Oats Market in Sedgefield,” said Smuts.
Stall items will include farm-fresh fruit and vegetables, free-range eggs, honey, farm-fresh butter, cheeses and dairy products, artisanal breads and pastries, coffee, herbal teas, and more.
“We will be recycling our waste and asking vendors to reduce their use of plastic containers.”
This year’s market dates are set for, Saturday, November 24 and Saturday, December 22. From January 2019, the Organic and Fresh Food Market will be held from 08:00 to 13:00 on the last Saturday of every month.
The venue is Chicky’s Yard in Ellis Street. Entrance is free.
