Mamie eliminate gallant Oostelikes
RUGBY fans saw what was described as the game of the season when Motherwell RFC pulled off a hard-earned 22-20 win over the gallant Despatch Oostelikes in their EP Rugby Gold Cup competition quarter-finals at Motherwell NU 1 Rugby Stadium on Saturday.
Easterns, as Oostelikes are called by their supporters, came to Motherwell with one objective in mind: to spoil Mamie’s unbeaten home record of the season and advance to the semi-finals.
Motherwell NU 1 Stadium was abuzz when Sisa Soxuza scored Mamie’s opening try, which was easily converted by their full-back, Andile Ace Rhune, to give the home side a 7-0 lead.
The visiting side equalised when their wing, Gideon Poefru, scored their opening try, which was converted by fly-half Daan Agulhas.
Motherwell RFC regained the lead as Musawenkosi Pienaar scored an unconverted try that put them 12-7 ahead.
Easterns equalised after Poefru scored his second try. Agulhas missed the conversion.
The Despatch side looked as though they would score their third try, but the home side did not panic.
In the last 10 minutes before the break, Masibulele Smith and Pienaar scored unconverted tries.
Oostelikes decreased the deficit to 22-15 after Agulhas collected three points from a penalty kick in the last minute of the first half.
In the early stages of the second half, Mamie kept Easterns in their own territory for a long time, but the visitors managed to defend successfully without making mistakes.
Oostelikes were dealt a serious blow after fly-half Agulhas sustained a shoulder injury that ruled him out of the game.
In the last minutes, Kivido Stulivin scored Oostelikes’ unconverted try that gave the home side a 22-20 win. Motherwell RFC flank Vuyisa Twani and Oostelikes’ centre Shaun Plaatjies each had an outstanding game.
