A BRAND new social housing development, being built in Victoria Drive, Walmer, is set to bring relief to people who work in the area but currently have to travel far distances from their current homes.
Own Haven Housing Association is building a total of 630 brand new flats ranging from bachelor to one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. If all goes to plan, tenants will be able to move into the first 145 flats by November 1.
According to client services manager, Lynn Wood, the housing will be available at an affordable rate to suit the average income. “We are committed to providing suitable accommodation for people earning below R15 000 per month.”
Potential clients will be screened during the application process. Wood added that the premises will in due course boast a play area for children and access will be controlled, providing a safe environment.
“We have a thriving community development arm running at our head office in East London with a functioning soup kitchen, homework centre, netball teams and soccer teams and looking to expand this in PE once we have the buildings tenanted,” Wood said.
