OPERATION Basadi, in the northern areas of Port Elizabeth, culminated at the weekend in various phases where the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, led a team of officers through gang territory, interacting with the community and handing out pamphlets.
Roadblock duties, raiding drug hot spots and stop-and-search operations were included in the seven-hour operation.
Female law enforcers from the Metro Police, as well as the junior provincial commissioner and the junior station commander of SAPS Gelvandale were included in the operation.
Ntshinga urged the community to work with the police and to report illegal activities and persons with illegal firearms and dangerous weapons to the police.
“Do not harbour criminals who are instilling fear in law-abiding citizens and also do not attack the police who are doing their job in protecting their lives and property.”
During the walkabout, 26 houses were visited in Helenvale. Simultaneous roadblocks were conducted throughout the northern areas.
Female detectives from the Mount Road Cluster, FCS and the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit also conducted raids on suspects.
In total, 205 officers worked during the operations.
Three suspects were arrested for attempted murder, one for armed robbery, two for shoplifting, three for rape, two for possession of drugs and one for drunken driving.
During the operation, officers also confiscated R5 099 in cash, 200 packets of dagga, 74 dagga plants, two firearms, one toy gun, 10 Mandrax tablets and one cellphone.
A total of 44 fines were also issued to the value of R36 150.
Ntshinga expressed her appreciation to all the members who contributed to the success of Operation Basadi in Port Elizabeth. She urged the community policing forums to work together with the police to overcome crime.
