Briefing on Bailey’s Cottage at meeting
Members of the Muizenberg Historical Conservation Society will be hosting their general meeting and a talk on Sir Abe and Lady Mary Bailey on Sunday 2 September at 11:00.
“The meeting will be held at Het Posthuys, the oldest building on the False Bay coast, over which the society holds a management agreement with the South African Heritage Resources Agency,” says Glenn Babb, chairperson of the society.
At the meeting voting for nominations to the board will also take place. “After the meeting, Chris Taylor, our vice-chairperson, will give a presentation on Sir Abe and Lady Mary Bailey. The society is charged with the upkeep of his grave on Boyes Drive. Sir Abe was an important mining magnate, philanthropist and sportsman. He will be remembered for the cottage called Bailey’s Cottage on the sea side of the railway tracks in Muizenberg. One of our cannons on the stoep of Het Posthuys will be fired to commemorate the Battle of Muizenberg, which happened 223 years ago. All present will be invited to share in wine and snacks after a convivial get-together.”
