Police are investigating a case of reckless driving and negligence following an incident where a City of Cape Town official was injured on Saturday 15 September.
The principal inspector suffered minor injuries during a hit-and-run while busy at a roadblock.
According to a statement from the City, the vehicle pulled out of the traffic, raced through the roadblock and hit the inspector.
He was taken to Mellowmed Hospital in Tokai.
According to local police an investigation is underway but no arrest has been made yet.
The City has condemned violence against officials on duty.
Mayco member for safety, security and social services, JP Smith, says the inspector was treated for minor injuries and was discharged the next day.
“The City cannot tolerate the threat to the lives of our personnel. Staff members who are targeted in attacks often need to receive medical treatment as well as trauma counselling and many times, staff members who sustain injuries need to be booked off duty for long periods of time.”
The roadblock, which saw about 144 people arrested, was operated by the City Traffic Department’s Drunk Driving Awareness Unit during the past weekend.
Ninety-two of the arrests were for driving under the influence of alcohol and 2474 fines were issued for various offences.
