CT City set to fly PSL flag

The soccer club Cape Town City will be the only one flying the soccer flag in the Premier Soccer League for the 2018/19 season after Ajax Cape Town accepted their fate to play in the National First Division (NFD) after being relegated.

At the press conference held at Ikamva on Friday 27 July, Ari Efstatiou, CEO of Ajax Cape Town, said that the club withdrew the appeal of the interdict to start the PSL season this coming weekend to clarify Ajax’s position to play in the PSL or in the NFD.

“On Thursday Judge Fisher gave the PSL the go-ahead to appeal the interdict and their appeal would take between four and 12 weeks. This meant that Ajax, the players and staff would be in limbo and the PSL would start with the season on Saturday 4 August, depending on the outcome of the appeal.

“I hope that if the same thing happens to one of the other clubs in the PSL the process would follow the same procedure,” Efstatiou said.

The reason that Ajax is in this position is that they finished 15th on the PSL log for the 2017/2018 season and fielded Tendai Ndoro in six matches. Ndoro was registered for three clubs in one season and the points that Ajax accumulated in the matches he played in were deducted and given to Platinum Stars, Supersport United and Polokwane City. This meant that Ajax was relegated to the NFD without playing in the play-offs.

In her previous ruling Judge Denise Fisher said that the arbitrator Advocate William Mokhari, had no jurisdiction to deduct the points and give them to Ajax’s opposing teams, but she reversed her decision on Thursday in favour of the PSL. That is when Efstatiou decided to accept their fate to play in the NFD.

The other repercussion of Ajax playing in the NFD is that Ajax Amsterdam will probably cut ties with the team.

Ajax will start their first match on Sunday 19 August when they do battle with Jomo Cosmos in Vosloorus. The next match is against Cape Umoj on 25 August in the Athlone Stadium and they play Stellensbosch at the same venue on 1 September.

With Ajax playing in the NFD this season, it also means that some of the players will opt to play for other clubs. Brenden Petersen and Moosa Lebusa are the players that will probably leave the club.

New signings may include players like Shuaib Walters, Keletso Makgalwa and Khayelihle Shozi.

The squad for this season is: Morne Nel, Thabo Mosadi, Grant Magerman, Prince Nxumalo, Tashreeq Morris, Isaac Nhlapo, Yagan Sasman, Rodrick Kabwe, Sedwyn George, Jody February, Sirgio Kammies, Shane Saralina, Masilakhe Phohlongo, Mario Booysen, Luthando Mateza, Darren Johnson, Ismael Quattara, Gerald Takwara, Muzi Thabotha, Samodien May, Samuel Julies and Yannick Zakri. Youngsters on the fringes are: Kiyana Bell, Kegan Johannes, Riyaaz Koopstad and Kenan Abrahams.

. Cape Town City start their PSL campaign on Saturday 4 August when they play against Supersport United in the Cape Town Stadium before travelling to play Baroka on Wednesday 8 August. On Saturday 11 August they are in action against Maritzburg United in the quarter-final of the MTN8 Cup.

One of their latest signings is Peter Leeuwenberg, a goalkeeper from Ajax Amsterdam, who played on Saturday in the preseason match against Kaizer Chiefs, which they won 1-0.

Other players to look out for this season include Riyaard Norodien, Gift Links and Siphelele Mthembu.
