A father accused of killing his three-year-old twins last year died in Pollsmoor prison on Monday 14 January.
The Spanish dentist Mario-César Deus Yela was incarcerated for the alleged murder of his children in his holiday home in Hout Bay. He was due to appear in the Cape Town High Court at the end of February. The 48-year-old was arrested shortly after the incident which occurred last year. The twins’ mother found the bodies of the children in one of the bedrooms when she returned home.
David Lewies, Pollsmoor prison spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying: “On the morning of Monday 14 January at approximately 07:45 during unlock an official found the offender dead in his cell. We summoned the nurse to do the necessary in terms of confirming the death and she indicated that it appeared that the offender committed suicide through overdose of a combination of tablets. The case was reported to police and the family was contacted and informed,” said Lewies. The regional commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, Delikile Klaas, has called for an investigation into the death of Yela and a full incident report is required from the head of the Pollsmoor Remand Detention Facility.
