Diners dig in with local author

Residents of Fish Hoek enjoyed the second “story lunch” hosted by Sandi Larkin, owner of Sandi’s Bistro in Valyland Centre in Fish Hoek, on Saturday 25 August.

The first such lunch was held in July where Lily Reed’s book The Dark Seed was launched.

Guests attending the lunch could engage with the author while enjoying a delicious meal.

Larkin’s intention with these events is to allow people to connect with others in their community and to learn and be inspired by some amazing stories.

Proceeds from “Lunch with Lily” went towards the Lily Reed Foundation and the Family Counselling Centre, a private and affordable support centre in the heart of Fish Hoek. The funds will go towards enabling counselling in Ocean View, a community close to Reed’s heart.

Reed shared her story with such gentle strength and confidence she left all the guests inspired and challenged by her experience of forgiveness and kindness. Her reflections on her journey through a violent trauma, beautifully portrayed in her book and in her spoken story, are a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience contained in each human being, and also of our need for connection, love and support.

Reed, the founder and director of the Lily Reed Foundation, serves to provide children and families with psychosocial intervention programmes that assist in breaking the cycle of violence.

She is a registered counsellor specialising in trauma and has a passion for working with children with the aim of giving them positive choices in their lives when they are so often subjected to violence and trauma as a way of life.
