A local designer believes giving back is about inspiring others to do better.
Victor Kok was explaining his decision to continue working with Rustenburg Girls’ High School and Rondebosch Boys’ High School (RBHS) in their collaborative interpretation of a Shakespearean play.
He sponsored the school’s outfits for their stage performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream that took place from Wednesday 15 to Saturday 18 August in the Memorial Hall at Rondebosch Boys’ High School.
He says people in a position to assist in bridging the education gap should make every effort to do so. Education also comes in many ways and forms, not just traditional classroom instruction.
“I wanted the children to see our designs and work and maybe aspire to enter the fashion design industry,” Kok says.
This play was the schools’ annual collaboration aimed at supporting its academic goal of teaching theatre history, drama theory and a selection of prescribed plays as part of the national curriculum.
Geila Wills from Rustenburg High says the production fitted in with the curriculum. “Perhaps the two schools now also share a senior dramatic arts department. The academic subject (drama) is taught in a co-education environment with Rustenburg actresses and Rondebosch actors together studying theatre history, drama theory and a selection of prescribed plays from the national curriculum. For the staff and learners involved there have been many highlights, camaraderie and good humour of the Rustics, all played by ’Bosch boys. This group has been willing to take comedic risks, the actors have not allowed themselves to be inhibited or self-conscious.”
Adrian Skelly of RBHS adds: “We were looking for a play with a large cast, with equally meaty roles for both female and male characters. The fast pace of this particular Shakespeare script has widespread appeal and, of course, the fact that there are no copyright restrictions or costs also played a part.”
Gabriella Sancho, who played Puck, says the play gave them a different acting experience. Sponsorships received by the schools contributed to a successful event.
