Draper Street Park gets a facelift

Draper Street Park in Claremont is now cleaner and safer after receiving a facelift through the ward 59 budget.

Councillor Ian Iversen says the renovations followed reports from residents about social ills and lack of safety in this park.

He says he was informed that “many homeless people who often occupy the land next to the railway line used to enter the park, and according to local residents would drink, smoke dagga and aggressively beg when moms and dads were in the park with family members”.

Iversen says the more the public makes use of the park, the better.

He invites surrounding schools in the area to make use of the park.

“I would encourage teachers to make use of this large park for outside activities.”

According to him the renovations included the repainting of play equipment and the placement of soft matting under the swings, seesaw and jungle gym.

Balancing poles and benches have also been installed in the park, and Iversen says two tables with chairs have been ordered.

“One often sees a number of child minders with prams and kids enjoying the park.

“If locals would like to sit in the park and enjoy a picnic, these tables will certainly add to the enjoyment.”

Due to the changes, Iversen says the gate in Stegman Road has been locked and the entrance is now from Draper Street.
