Extra levies are ‘killing’ pensioners
The letter from Cllr Johan van der Merwe refers (“You may qualify for rates rebates,” 21 August).
Sweet words councillor, but of no help when some unknown ‘entity’ values a house above the ‘rebate’ level. Never mind that though – what really needs your attention is the new scheme of bleeding money out of pensioners, i.e. paying for water pipes, and the electricity meter box.
I have had that electricity box on my wall for 23 years and now have to pay R130 per month for it! This is outrageous and totally unacceptable. I am almost 80, trying to survive on a meagre pension, and this payment for absolutely nothing in return is killing.
The other bone of contention is paying for underground water pipes that have been there for over 40 years – this new tariff has doubled my water bill, I now have to pay R113 or so for a mere two kilolitre of water per month.
How do you people in the finance department expect old people to pay this? We cannot afford any luxuries in life as it is, and the new rip-off scheme of yours to get more money out of us is a disgrace.
I would like to see you cancel these two ‘daylight robbery’ expenses for anyone over 75 years of age. We have served our time as taxpayers and decent citizens, and deserve better treatment than what you’re giving us.
