Aviwe Sekeleni (28), from Eastridge is among the lucky recipients of bursaries provided by the City of Cape Town which was celebrated at a ceremony on Thursday 2 May.
Speaking to People’s Post the excited Sekeleni says that the bursary comes very handy because she will not have to worry about paying for her studies – it has been taken care of.
She says that she heard about the bursary opportunity from different media platforms and decided to give it a try.
To her surprise, she was chosen to be awarded and that was a moment worth celebrating for her.
“Getting this bursary made me very excited as it guarantees a job when I finish the course that I am doing,” she boasts.
She is enrolled as a BTech Internal Auditing student at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).
To seek greener pastures, she travelled from the town of Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape and lives with her cousins and grandparents. The bursary covers tuition and books.
She says it will help her realise her dream of becoming a certified auditor. It will also serve as financial relief as she will not graduate with debt.
“The bursary helped me when I was doing my national diploma but in order for me to be a certified internal auditor I need a BTech,” she explains.
She described auditing as being like a financial detective where one has to unearth the truth.
“I wish to thank the City for this opportunity and I want to say they must keep on giving bursaries to students,” she said.
Her cousin Babalwa Matontsi spoke highly of her, saying she is a driven young woman who is always thinking about ways to make money.
“I was very happy when she got the bursary because she has always wanted to study and the fact that she will not have to worry about debt is a relief,” Matontsi expressed.
She said her cousin is not the type who sits down and does nothing, as a result, she has a business where she sells weaves.
The City budgeted R6.4m for this programme and Mayco member for corporate services, Sharon Cottle, congratulated Sekeleni and all the other recipients.
“It is such a privilege for us to award financial support to these ambitious and deserving recipients,” said Cottle.
