Sixteen families who lost their belongings to a blaze at Imizamo Yethu informal settlement in Hout Bay yesterday (Wednesday 22 August) are pleading for help.
A fire razed twelve shacks and four formal houses in Chris Hani Road at around 13:25.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
A total of 25 adults and 17 children were left homeless.
Isaac Ngagya says he is devastated and needs help. He and his younger brother were left homeless and had to crash in a fellow congregant’s home for the night. The unemployed brothers have been staying in the shack for three years.
Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell, says the Informal Settlements and Backyarders Department has assessed the area and would provide starter fire kits to those affected. Powell says no injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident.
Theo Layne, spokesperson for City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, says four fire engines, a water tanker and a rescue vehicle with 24 firefighters, attended to the incident.
