The Imam Abdullah Haron Education Trust (IAHET), in conjunction with Bibi’s Kitchen, launched a 6km fun walk at Islamia College in Lansdowne last Monday.
The inaugural event, sponsored by Bibi’s Kitchen, will take place later this month to commemorate the life of apartheid activist Imam Abdullah Haron, who died in detention on Saturday 27 September 1969.
The fun walk was established for both fundraising and marketing purposes, and will kick off on Sunday 30 September at 08:00 from Imam Haron Road in Lansdowne.
“Through community participation the IAHET Bibi’s Kitchen 6km Family Fun Walkoffers the opportunity to increase public awareness of Imam Haron and his legacy as well as exposing the community to the work of the trust, thereby expanding our footprint,” explains IAHET deputy chairperson Ebrahim Mohamed.
“We also aim to raise the profile of the late Imam Abdullah Haron, especially to the younger generation, who may not be aware of his role in the liberation struggle, through working in marginalised communities that culminated in him making the ultimate sacrifice.”
He explains all proceeds collected from the fun walk will go towards an Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme. To date, the trust has raised and spent more than R2m on providing programmes to over 1200 children in underprivileged communities across the Cape Flats.
More than 600 parents have also been trained in ECD workshops that have empowered them to be of greater educational benefit to their children.
“IAHET’s planned ECD programme will run in partnership with well-established and highly respected agencies including Grassroots Educare Trust, the Foundation for Community Work and the Centre for Early Childhood Development.”
Mohammed explains his team plans to extend the ECD programme to Mitchell’s Plain, Retreat, Bridgetown, the Vygieskraal informal settlement and the West Coast fishing village of St Helena Bay.
The public is requested to support the event. Fun walk participants will receive a bottle of water, a medal, a goody bag and access to entertainment.
Entry fee for the IAHET Bibi’s Kitchen 6km Family Fun Walk is R35 per person. Applications can be downloaded and completed via Webtickets.co.za or at Pick n Pay stores.
