The race was on between Leanne Watkins, the baker of cupcakes and other cakes, and Tineke Tuzee-Lombard, the biltong seller, on who was going to pocket the most money at the community market held on Sunday 5 August at Hotel Glencairn. No winner was proclaimed and they shared the spoils.
It was also the first time the hotel hosted the market and the next market is on Sunday 2 September.
“This ongoing market on the first Sunday of each month from 10:00 to 15:00 started in July 2016.
“We have many talented residents living in and around Glencairn and I thought a community market would not only give them a chance to sell their products but also meet the other residents. We started with 20 stalls and this year we had 42 vendors,” says Annette le Roux, organiser of the market.
Masicorp, a local NPO from Masiphumelele, sold fabulous breads, while Charles Daniels, a local artist who paints lovely landscapes in and around Cape Town, sold his paintings. Jade Woos sold handmade soap, Candice Leonard hosted a fairy garden workshop and Precious Phiri treated shoppers to his healthy juice.
“The hotel was delighted at the very first market and I am sure their bar takings skyrocketed. A percentage of the stall fees goes toward Neighbourhood Watch and two free stalls were given to Sharon’s Furries and Tom Ro Haven. Tears, the animal rescue, also had a stall,” says Le Roux.
Between September and December they will have four special markets.
“We are aiming to host a health and wellness expo in October with a whole host of healing and healthy stalls.
“I was selling real honey, Epsom salts and Himalayan salt lamps on Sunday and hope to add to the health and wellness expo in October,” Le Roux says.
