‘Hustle’ begins to pay off

Local rapper Christal van der Vent, known as Crissy, has completed another visual offering celebrating local flare, culture and hustle.

Choosing Gugulethu as her backdrop, she shot the video for her song “Thixo Bless My Hustle” on Saturday 21 July.

“The song means ‘God bless my hustle’. The meaning behind the song is that it is very hard to make it in the music industry so I am asking God to bless my hustle with everything I am doing so that I can thrive in this industry,” says Crissy.

The song and video are yet to be released and will be available on all digital platforms at the end of August.

“The concept of this video is to bring the people in the community together and show that we are having a good time, and also to showcase some locations in the ‘hood’. I have a team that I’m working with who sit down and discuss all strategic measures when it comes to my music videos and events,” she says.

“I am the mastermind behind all my lyrics and the song is on my mixtape called The Practice Run. I wrote ‘Thixo Bless My Hustle’ in less than a day and the whole mixtape consisting of 14 tracks was written and recorded in less than four days.”

She has already released four music videos on Youtube for her songs “No Shortcuts”, “Pull Up” and “I.A.W.N.T.”.

“The reason I chose to shoot the music video in Gugulethu is because the concept of the video matches so much of the scenery that is found in the area. Also the support of the community is major. I performed in Gugulethu previously and the support and respect I got from the crowd was beyond what I expected,” she says.

Crissy also hopes to see more artists hustle.

“Always surround yourself with people who have a positive and motivated energy because that will get you to be driven in a sense where you will always push yourself to work hard,” she says.
