Partnership policing between Ocean View police and the Major Offences Reaction Team yielded success on Wednesday 31 July, leading to the arrest of two suspects, aged 24 and 16, for charges relating to the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
“The police were patrolling the flats around Milky Way in Ocean View, also known by the residents as The Blokke when they spotted a group of suspicious-looking men standing next to the wall of one of the flats. The police searched the men and found a firearm containing nine live rounds of ammunition on the 24-year-old suspect,” says Sergeant Leon Fortuin, Ocean View police spokesperson.
The serial number of the firearm had been filed off.
The police also found another firearm containing two live rounds of ammunition on the 16-year-old suspect. Both suspects were charged and appeared in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 1 August.
. The previous week, a 16-year-old boy appeared in the same court for charges relating to possession of a zip gun and illegal possession of ammunition.
He was arrested by Ocean View detectives while they were patrolling Neptune Way in the new area in Ocean View, known to the locals as Stonehaven, when they spotted a group of suspicious-looking men staring at them.
“The police approached the men and started searching them. The police then found an apparatus which was an old flare gun in the possession of the 16-year-old. This zip gun also contained one live round of ammunition. He was charged and appeared in court on said charges,” says Fortuin.
