Professor Muhammed Haron will deliver the 11th annual Imam Haron Memorial Lecture at Islamia College in Lansdowne tomorrow.
Haron, who is the only son of the late Imam Abdullah Haron, will present his lecture at the Islamia Auditorium at 19:30.
The lecture, titled “Imam Abdullah Haron: A Man for All Seasons”, is organised by the Imam Abdullah Haron Education Trust (IAHET) in honour of the late political activist and former imam of Stegman Road Mosque in Claremont, who died in police detention on Saturday 27 September 1969.
Haron is currently based at the University of Botswana’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies where he works as a full-time professor in Religious Studies.
He was previously attached to the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the University of Cape Town (UCT) in the 1980s and 1990s.
He was a visiting lecturer at the National University of Malaysia in 1994, the University of Stellenbosch in 2008 and Rhodes University in 2008 and 2018.
He is also an associate researcher at the University of Pretoria, an executive member of the Centre for Contemporary Islam at UCT and the editor of two publications – the Annual Review of Islam in Africa, and the online Research Africa Reviews which is based at Duke University in the USA.
He is currently working on a historiographical study of Shaykh Yusuf Al-Makassari’s works, a University of South Africa-based project; an annotated bibliography of Southern Africa’s Muslims, as well as a biographical study of his late father.
Haron follows a series of high-profile personalities who have delivered the Imam Haron Memorial Lecture in previous years, including professors Jonathan Jansen, Adam Habib and Neville Alexander, ministers Ebrahim Patel, Naledi Pandor and Trevor Manuel, Justice Albie Sachs, retired constitutional court judge Zak Yacoob and student activist Fasiha Hassen who delivered last year’s lecture.
