Despite the high number of child deaths on Western Cape roads, the provincial government is making inroads in reducing the number of fatalities.
Department of Transport and Public Works spokesperson Byron la Hoe says that as part of the Provincial Strategic Plan (2014 to 2019), the department has set out to reduce child road deaths in children under 15 by 25%.
This would amount to a reduction from 10.2 deaths per 100 000 children in 2014 to 7.65 deaths per 100 000 children in 2019.
Last year, says La Hoe, there were 125 child road deaths, representing 7.76 deaths per 100 000 children. “The department is thus positive that the target of a 25% reduction in the child road death rate will be achieved. Programmes run by the department which have contributed to this exceptional achievement are traffic law enforcement, road safety education and the Safely Home Calendar road safety campaign,” he says.
“Reducing traffic speed is one of the quickest and most certain ways to reduce child traffic injuries. Reducing speed makes crashes less likely to occur, and less severe when they do occur.”
