NPO sector shares skills

Some 230 representatives of over 150 non-profit organisations (NPOs) and civil society bodies gathered in Woodstock last week, sharing expertise on good governance at the annual #ThinkGood event.

The members of the NPO Service Providers’ Network also engaged on management and strategies for the sustainability of NPOs.

Known as #ThinkGood, the free event was coordinated on behalf of the NPO Service Providers’ Network by CMDS, financial management consultants to the non-profit sector.

It took place at Inyathelo: The South African Institute for Advancement, in Woodstock on Tuesday 14 August.

Felicity Weekes, CMDS operations manager, says #ThinkGood is a sector contribution to Mandela Day.

The #ThinkGood event is held later in the year (August) so that NPOs that hold their own Mandela Day activities can take part in #ThinkGood too.

“This was the fourth annual event and the response was phenomenal,” Weekes says.

“We were fully booked within three days, with another 56 organisations on the waiting list. We thank the organisers and participants, all of whom shared their expertise at no cost.”

The day-long programme covered topics such as social media to support fundraising; financial sustainability through investments; financial management and compliance, and data security. Participants also booked one-on-one sessions with Inyathelo on organisational sustainability and with other sector experts on subjects such as tax, fundraising, public relations and marketing communications.

Inyathelo operations director Feryal Domingo says: “We were delighted to host this event as Inyathelo owns the Civil Society Sustainability Centre, which was funded by Atlantic Philanthropies. The centre was bustling with activity and it was a wonderful opportunity to network and build up skills.”

Inyathelo is an NPO working to sustain and strengthen civil society organisations and grow local philanthropy in support of a vibrant democracy in South Africa. V To find out more, visit www.inyathelo.org.za/ and NPO Service Providers Network on Facebook.
