Police gearing up for festive season

“As we are fast approaching the festive season, Diep River police would like to encourage all community members to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times,” says Constable Zak Marais, the station’s spokesperson.

In gearing up for the festive season, the station has started reminding the community about safety precautions that would help keep them safe.

“Crime fighting is not a one-way street and requires the cooperation of both the police and public to work together. Diep River SAPS has a close working relationship with its various crime-fighting structures. We have to express our gratitude to those many volunteer patrollers, security service providers and other role players that form part of the fight against crime.”

Among the precautionary tips Marais gives is that a high fence around the house with lockable gates is much safer than a high wall due to improved visibility.

He says an alarm system, preferably connected to an armed response company, can act as an effective deterrent, and security lights on the outside of the house improve the protection of a house.

He says people should not allow strangers onto their premises or into their house without having properly identified the person, especially at night.

He also advises the public to always be alert and conscious of their surroundings when using an ATM.

In the event of a hijacking, in many instances, injuries and deaths are the result of inconsiderate actions taken by the victims themselves, he says.

“There are certain guidelines that could increase a victim’s chances of survival. Know what to expect as a victim. People who are taken hostage or hijacked tend to experience feelings of anxiety, shock, disbelief and confusion. This first reaction usually leads to resistance or retaliation which could have fatal consequences. Prepare to be alone and isolated from your family, friends or loved ones, and to lose track of time and place.”

He suggests a victim does everything the perpetrators tell them to and to keep their brain active, as well as trying to remain oriented regarding movements, directions, time and place.

“Try to remain cool and calm. Don’t become panic stricken or hysterical, offer any form of resistance or become abusive and aggressive or lose your temper.”
