Lourens explains the purpose of their annual International Life Chain Day taking place on Buitengracht Street on Sunday 7 October from 14:00 to 16:00.
She says not much is done to educate women about abortion and its consequences, so by holding this annual demonstration they want to show the public that it is wrong and that action has to be taken against it.
“By naming the Abortion Act of 1996, which came into effect on 1 February 1997, the “Termination of Pregnancy Act” and by calling a baby a foetus, many would want to hide the reality of abortion. Every abortion kills the life of a new person. The truth about the development of the baby in the womb [is that] at three weeks after conception, a heartbeat can be detected, at six weeks brain waves ... [and] the multiple physical risks of the abortion procedure [such as] perforation of the uterus, infections etc. And the after-effects of abortion including post-abortion syndrome are especially not explained to women seeking an abortion. We have been seeking to educate the public about this issue.
“When a nation devalues its most helpless and innocent citizens and allows them to be slaughtered in their millions, it is no wonder that all other life is treated as cheap. It is an urgent priority for every citizen to expose, oppose and end this genocide of children made in the image of God. If the state does not protect the most innocent and helpless of all citizens, including pre-born babies, then it does not truly uphold human rights at all,” says Lourens.
She encourages the public, including men and children, to join the demonstration.
She says participants will stand on the sides of the road with placards that proclaim the right to life of pre-born babies.
Lourens says they will provide placards and those who are unable to stand for a long time may bring chairs.
