Taxis impounded in Mitchell's Plain blitz

A joint taxi operation has seen several taxis impounded in Mitchell’s Plain today (23 May). 

All three City of Cape Town enforcement agencies participated in the integrated taxi blitz at Westgate Mall. 

Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith says Law Enforcement, Traffic Services and Metro Police officers recorded 144 offences during the operation. 

"Offences recorded include nine unlicensed vehicles, 14 overloaded vehicles, 15 unlicensed drivers, 15 impounded taxis and 28 fines for not having operational licenses. 

"The blitz comes on the back of continuous public complaints about the inconsiderate and reckless behaviour of public transport operators, and operating license contraventions.

Officers will focus on hot spot areas, based on complaints received," Smith says.

Smith continues pooling resources to step up efforts in improving enforcement of the public transport sector will be an ongoing, weekly operation.
