Teams start campaign

Five soccer teams from Cape Town are in action this weekend when the competition in the National Football Division (NFD) kicks off. The teams are Milano United from Grassy Park, Cape Umoya United from Cape Town, Ubuntu Cape Town (formerly known as FC Cape Town) from Athlone, Stellenbosch, and Ajax Cape Town from Parow.

Ajax was relegated from the Premier Soccer League, and with an appeal still pending on whether they will be allowed back into the PSL, despite matches already being played, they opted to compete this season in the NFD.

Ubuntu was the “giant slayer” last year in the Nedbank Cup, a competition where sixteen teams besides the PSL teams compete against one another. They dispatched Jomo Cosmos, AmaZulu and Polokwane City before stumbling against Free State Stars in the quarter-finals of the competition. This success is due to coach Casey Prince, and the team hopes to repeat this achievement in the NFD.

Waseem Isaacs from Bonteheuwel and a former player of FC Cape Town is one of the players on whom the team will depend this season. He is a veteran and with his experience the young players around him will thrive.
