First the challenging news: The recent matric results at Masiphumelele High School are down almost 10 % from 66.7 % in 2017 to 57.5 % in 2018.
This is sad, indeed, also knowing about all the extra efforts by the school to continue the “48 to 84” campaign, which was kicked off two years ago by the Western Cape Education Department circuit manager Thandi Jafta. It was so successful in the first year (when the results went up almost 20 % from 48.9 %).
But it also confirms that investments in education must be long term and sustainable.
As school principal Nelson Mafrika explained: This Grade 12 failed relatively more also because it was the same Grade 10 which had been most affected during the 2015 and 2016 unrest and protest in the community (when even one learner was murdered in drug related gang crime). It was more difficult to lift up their and their parents spirit, he said.
Good news is the unshaken commitment by several stakeholders to the campaign “48 to 84” – until Masi achieved the 84 % matric pass rate.
For example ongoing support by Masicorp in organising a good cooperation between Masi and Fish Hoek High School, which led to an increase in good Math results, despite all other mentioned limits.
One learner, Lwando Melamane, excelled with six distinctions. Viva, Lwando !
I also want to encourage all, not to use the Masi High matric results for political election campaigns, but to keep supporting the school in the way it is needed most – with extra learning support and excellent teaching and matric camps. Of course, also the parents and learners have to play an important role.
Good news also is the unbroken spirit at the management and teaching level of Masi High alike. First financial support for the school for 2019 came in already from the HOKISA Children’s Home in Masiphumelele and even from the German teachers trade union (GEW). Masi High will make all of them proud again in 2019.
