Mitchell’s Plain police executed an integrated operation focusing on cable theft and secondhand goods control in conjunction with the Law Enforcement Copperheads and Police Rapid Rail Unit on Monday 13 August.
They focused on scrap metal dealers and recyclers adjacent to the Mitchell’s Plain railway line and including Mitchell’s Plain CBD, Beacon Valley and Tafelsig.
At 11:40 a 54-year-old woman was arrested when officers did a compliance inspection at a scrap yard in Francis Street, Tafelsig. They found four white doors and a bonnet allegedly belonging to a double-cab bakkie. They later found the bakkie abandoned in the Wolfgat Nature Reserve.
On further investigation, officers found a Mazda double-cab bakkie which was being stripped. They arrested two other suspects, aged 27 and 16, and confiscated a red VW Golf which was used to transport the vehicle parts.
