Women’s Day thrills at Killarney

The Killarney organisers will break with tradition when they stage the sixth round of the Power Series on National Women’s Day.

And if the incredible crash-and-burn action is anywhere near the tempo achieved at last month’s meeting, spectators are going to be in for a treat.

The weather is likely to be a factor, with marginally lower speeds but far more accidents and incidents certain to happen in the event of a wet track.

However, that will not apply to the one-make Makita Supercar drivers who regularly tear into one another regardless of circuit conditions.

This will be emphasised on Thursday by the appearance of Clubman Saloon superstar Danie van Niekerk who is known to “skrik-vir-niks”.

However, Van Niekerk can expect strong opposition from established hotshots like Jarryd Evans, Andrew Moffitt and Glen Phillips.

While the Burly-Pro GTi Challenge is in fact three races in one, Jano van der Westhuizen (VW Polo Vivo), is going to be the target for bombers like Francois van Tonder (VW Polo 6) and the experienced Greig Edwards (VW Jetta) in class A. Behind them the Busi brothers are always worth watching as they battle for supremacy in class C.

Then, although the Mike’s Place Clubman Saloons were involved in many of the headline incidents in round five, the majority of them are back on track and more excitement is assured.

Here, anyone who beats Michael le Sueur (VW Golf 1) is likely to gain a place on the podium.

Another driver to watch is former Stock Car Mini champion, 15-year-old Ciara van Niekerk, who is (appropriately) making her main circuit debut in a VW Polo.

Franco Donadio’s Ford Escort 1 is quicker and far more reliable, than an Eskom bolt of electricity and has to start as favourite in the Classic Car category.

However many will be equally content watching Erik Mouton’s giant 6.3 litre Chev de Ville V8, or Eric van der Merwe’s quick Porsche 944 Turbo.

With 18 events on the programme from 09.30, admission is R80 for adults and R20 for scholars under 16.

There is no charge for kiddies under 12 or for grandstand seating or pit entry.
