Mother of abandoned baby appears in court
A PORT Shepstone woman appeared in court on charges related to her allegedly dumping her newborn baby boy in a bush last week.
The infant was rescued from a thicket in Albersville after residents who’d heard his cries contacted a local security company.
It is believed he had been abandoned some two days earlier.
He was rushed to hospital and a case of concealment of birth was opened.
Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said a woman in her mid-thirties handed herself over to police over the weekend.
The woman was brought before a magistrate on Monday.
“The accused appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court and was released on bail.
“The accused was charged with the abandonment of a baby.
“She will be back in court on August 31,” said NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara.
The baby remains at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital until the hospital’s social worker can place the child in a suitable home.
