Rural fun run a success
IN keeping with its vision to be a professional, well-managed organisation that promotes a healthy lifestyle for communities through sport, Ugu Athletics Club hosted the Goldenglo Fun Run/Walk last Thursday at Enxolobeni Primary School, KwaNyuswa Ward 34.
The rural areas have been targeted by the club due to their abundance of talented youth. The marathons, for example, are dominated by runners from rural areas with the champion of the 2018 Comrades Marathon being the product of the rural area Bulwer in KwaZulu-Natal.
KwaNyuswa, near Lake Eland, has eleven schools with two being high schools, hence it was targeted for youth development in athletics.
The distances for the fun run/walk were 4 km and 8 km.The turn out was pleasing with 500 registered participants, plus a few unregistered runners who arrived just before the start — a new record for the club.
The route consisted of a few uphills and down hills on a gravel road, typical of a rural set up.
All finishers received medals and there were also lucky draws.
With regards entertainment, music, 600 litres of soft drinks, goodie bags and much more was supplied by our local sponsor.
Ugu Athletics aims to fulfil its mandate by hosting many more fun runs/walks in the District. — Supplied
