Stabbing leaves one dead, another injured

A44-year-old woman was killed and a 47-year-old man seriously injured in what is suspected to have been a horrific knife fight that took place at their home in Margate, extension 3 on Sunday afternoon.

The pair, a married couple with three children, were found brutally stabbed.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, the woman was found on the bedroom floor in a critical condition.

“Paramedics tried fervently to resuscitate the woman on scene, who went into cardiac arrest, and she tragically died,” said Herbst.

The man, Herbst said, was treated on scene by an advanced life support paramedic before being transported by a Netcare 911 ambulance to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Margate SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said the incident occurred at about 1.15 pm on Sunday afternoon.

He said two kitchen knives were found at the scene and police were still investigating the events leading up to the attack.

Mfeka also confirmed that Margate detectives were investigating an “inquiry pertaining to forgery and uttering involving the deceased”.

The woman, who was a deputy principal at a local school, was alleged to have taken over the qualifications of another teacher, Nonkanyiso Fumba, who died in 2011 of natural causes.

According to previous reports, Fumba’s family confirmed her death and said they were aware that someone else was using her qualifications. They expressed concerned over how they had accessed them.

The qualifications included an advanced certificate in education and a national professional diploma in education, both from Rhodes University in 2008. She had also allegedly used Fumba’s matric certificate to secure a job at another high school before landing a position at the Margate school.

Department of Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa reportedly said they viewed the allegations as “extremely serious” and were investigating, this amid the SA Council for Educators (Sace) media proclamation that it was planning to hand over 19 cases of teachers allegedly using fake qualifications to the Hawks.

Attempts to reach the department for comment following the Margate deputy principal’s death were unsuccessful at the time of going to print .
A murder and attempted murder docket has been opened by Margate. No arrests have been made.
