A growing number of Uitenhage youngsters are showing a keen interest in the game of chess, which is regarded as an exercise of infinite possibilities of the mind.
Patrick Baartman from the Nimzowitsch Chess Club said, “there is a significant growth in the number of juniors joining the club and they are passionate, dedicated and also committed. This results in our club growing from strength to strength.
“The discipline of our juniors is outstanding and they have shown great improvement in their games.”
Members from the Nimzowitsch Chess Club meet every Monday and Wednesday from 15:00 to 20:00 at the Allanridge Civic Centre to play chess.
The executive committee consists of Deon Anthony (chairperson), Cheneveve Phillips (secretary), Benjamin Muller (treasurer) and Patrik Baartman (public relations officer).
“Apart from the discipline of our juniors, the punctuality of senior members is noteworthy and proof that chess has an influence in our community,” said Baartman.
It is said that chess develops mental abilities used throughout life, and that it increases concentration, critical thinking and problem solving as it develops the mind to look at things from different perspectives.
“We are an open multi-racial chess club and invite all chess players and those interested in learning how to play the game to join us.
“Our objective is for scholars to become avid chess players and show other unions we in Uitenhage can compete against the best,” said Baartman.
