The Uitenhage SPCA provides the only pound services to the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality (NMBMM) and it also provides daily and after hour services across the metropole to deal with neglected, abused, unwanted and stray animals.
The expiry of the SPCA’s municipal contract, coupled with the subsequent non-payment from the municipality to the SPCA and the ongoing need for this critically important service, does not mean that the service provided can simply be stopped.
The SPCA management and staff need public support to continue this critical service and the animals impounded need to be fed and cared for whilst the contract is renegotiated and officially re-awarded.
“We are therefore most grateful for the corporate support received to date and appeal to all animal lovers and caring corporate organizations to assist in funding the SPCA in the interim and to allocate a share of their annual corporate social investment to all the animal care and anti-cruelty organizations in Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Athol Trollip, Nelson Mandela Bay councillor.
To date, corporate social investment to the SPCA stands at R120 000 with the largest amounts coming from Volkswagen of South Africa (R50 000) and Sovereign Foods (R40 000).
These donations come at a time where the SPCA has been without municipal contract funding for two months.
Mahatma Gandhi once said “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated”.
“This is why animal protection and animal anti-cruelty organisations are so critical in a modern society.
“Humans have in many instances lost respect for animals. This is most evident in big cities where population density results in anti-social behaviour,” said Trollip.
“Organisations like the SPCA have become our animal respect and care consciences. They remind us that animals are sentient beings and that they need to be treated as such.
“Organisations like the SPCA are characterised by the passionate work and commitment of animal lovers,” said Trollip.
He has for this reason teamed up with other high profile personalities to approach various corporate enterprises to donate desperately needed funds to the SPCA.
“Our neglect of animals in our care and those without care is a poor reflection on us as a society. This is not a political intervention, animals don’t vote, it is a compassionate human intervention to assist those that take care of animals in need and those that are neglected and abused,” said Trollip.
