IN 2019 for the first time, Goodyear South Africa participated in the celebrations of World Book Day and called on employees based at its manufacturing facility in Uitenhage as well the head office in Midrand to donate new and pre-loved books.
Goodyear partnered with two schools close to its operations; Inxiweni Primary School in Tembisa, Johannesburg; as well as Stephen Nkomo Primary School in Kwanobuhle, a long-standing partner of the company.
Employees heeded the call and donated a total of 413 books, which were given to these schools.
“Curiosity is wanting to know more!”, exclaimed one of the learners at Stephen Nkomo Primary School, following Manufacturing Director, Ian Hind’s speech on the relationship between curiosity and reading.
“Reading is important for many reasons but there are a few that stand out.
“It develops our minds and language, improves our memory and communication, develops learners’ listening skills, helps our imagination and creative thinking and is the best cost-effective entertainment,” stated Hind when addressing the learners.
Zoliswa Njiyela, Stephen Nkomo Primary School Principal, thanked Goodyear for considering the learners of the school in this initiative, stating her appreciation of how the books will help the collection of their library.
“As Goodyear South Africa, we are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives,” concluded Hayes-Powell.
