DANCE students, young and old, from Despatch, Uitenhage and Kirkwood will be among the more than 650 participants in the Friendly City Dance Festival which will be held at the PE Opera House next week.
The brand new festival aims to showcase all dance genres, in more than 1 000 dance items, to foster a love of dance for performers and audience alike. It will also afford dance students the opportunity to perform and compete on stage in friendly competition and have their dance ability adjudicated in a constructive manner by professionals in the dance field.
“We are very excited. Five ladies, some of whom have started with ballet at an older age and seventeen children from The Ballet Studio will participate,” said Anneke van der Smit from The Ballet Studio in Uitenhage.
“One of the senior ballet dancers, Melanie Thompson, will be performing together with her daughter Leigh and another teenage dancer, Elke van der Smit.”
Dance genres will include ballet, hip-hop, tap, contemporary, modern, rhythmic and show dance.
Dance schools within the UD country to participate are The Ballet Studio (Uitenhage), Hosking Academy of Dance (Kirkwood), Ibhayi Rhythmic Gymnastics (Despatch).
The festival runs from 20-25 August and culminates in a gala concert on Saturday, 25 August at 18:30, featuring the champion performers selected by the adjudicators along with invited guest artists.
