AN overview of close to 50 years of research, ranging from work on bycaught and stranded animals to field studies in the Eastern Cape waters, will be presented at Bayworld and the public are invited to attend.
As part of the 4th African Marine Mammal Colloquium, to be held from the 20th to 24th August at Bayworld, the organisers are preparing this evening presentation on 22 August, which will be held in collaboration with the Algoa Bay Hope Spot initiative.
The topic, “On the Shoulders of Giants: The Port Elizabeth Museum as a Springboard for Scientific Excellence” will be jointly presented by Dr Stephanie Plön, Meredith Thornton and Dr Greg Hofmeyr.
Dr Plön is a researcher at the Earth Stewardship Science Research Institute (Nelson Mandela University); Ms Thornton is a research coordinator for the Dyer Island Conservation Trust and a research associate at the Mammal Research Institute (University of Pretoria); and Dr Hofmeyr is the curator for Marine Mammals at Bayworld.
All three presenters have a long history of conducting marine mammal research with the Port Elizabeth Museum, both in South Africa and internationally.
