Seven houses and 10 shacks were razed in a fire in Imizamo Yethu on Wednesday, the City of Cape Town’s fire services confirmed.
Firefighters arrived at Chris Hani Road at about 13:25, spokesperson Theo Layne said.
Four fire engines, a water tanker, a rescue vehicle and 24 firefighters battled the blaze, which was contained by 14:20.

Sixty people have been displaced.
In a separate incident, 28 firefighters were trying to extinguish an inferno in Potsdam Road, Du Noon.
Layne said numerous informal structures were on fire.

By 14:30, the fire had not yet been contained.
Four fire engines, two water tankers and a rescue vehicle were at the scene.
"No injuries [have been] reported as yet," Layne said.
