Council to probe Meyersdal house collapse

Johannesburg - The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) said on Tuesday it will investigate the Meyersdal house collapse that killed seven workers.

"The NHBRC has sent a structural engineer and an inspector to the site of the collapsed house in Meyersdal today to properly investigate the project," Jeffrey Mahachi, head of the NHBRC's centre for research and housing innovation, said in a statement.

It wanted to establish the cause of the collapse and whether it fell within the ambit of the Housing Consumers Protection Measures Act.

Part of the luxury house in the Meyersdal Eco Estate in Alberton, south of Johannesburg, collapsed while builders were working on it on Monday morning.

Seven workers were killed.

Two of them were cut in half, Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi said on Monday.

Eight workers were injured.

"We continued with search in the morning where we removed rubble using excavating machines and did not find any bodies," Ntladi said on Tuesday.

The search was called off shortly before 13:00 when everyone who was on site was accounted for.

The Meyersdal Nature Estate Homeowners' Association said it would continue to co-operate with emergency services.

The association added that a trust would be set up to help the families of the deceased.
