Date set for Khayelitsha police report

Cape Town - The final report of the commission of inquiry into policing in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, will be released on 29 August, the commission said on Friday.

It was originally set to be released on 25 August.

"Western Cape Premier [Helen Zille] has granted an extension to the commission, to 29 August, for the submission of its final report," the commission said in a statement.

The report would be handed over to Zille at Lookout Hill in Khayelitsha between 13:30 and 15:00 on the day.

It would be handed over by commissioners, Judge Catherine O'Regan and Advocate Vusi Pikoli.

The report would also be made available on the commission's website at that time.

The commission, which sat earlier this year, was established by Zille two years ago.

It was mandated to investigate complaints received by the premier relating to allegations of inefficiency regarding the SA Police Service at three police stations in Khayelitsha, as well as other police units operating in the suburb.

It was further tasked to investigate allegations of a breakdown in relations between the Khayelitsha community and members of the SAPS.
