Johannesburg - An eThekwini metro police officer has been arrested for allegedly shooting dead his girlfriend in Durban, a spokesperson said on Friday.
He was arrested on Wednesday and is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Friday, said eThekwini metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Eugene Msomi.
"He was off-duty at the time," he said, adding that the case was being investigated by the SA Police Service and Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).
Msomi said police were also investigating whether the officer had used his service pistol in the crime.
The shooting happened on Tuesday, and the Daily News named the deceased as businesswoman Rose Bell who had luxury homes across the country.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokespersons Colonel Jay Naicker and Captain Thulani Zwane could not be reached for comment. Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini was also not available for comment.
