KZN farm murder suspect held

Pietermaritzburg - Police have arrested a man for the murder of farmer Peter Hackland, 61, in Carisbrook, Ixopo, on 7 May 2013.

Sources said the police were on the trail of a second suspect.

“They only arrested one person. They know who the second person is and they are after him,” said the source.

Hackland was contemplating retirement when he was shot dead in his house by two men pretending to be job hunters.

They accosted his daughter and domestic helper while Hackland was working on the farm.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said police believe the motive for Hackland’s murder was robbery, as the men took cash before fleeing.

The arrested man is expected to appear in the Ixopo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

News of the arrest was welcomed by the Ixopo Farmers’ Association and Kwanalu.
