Limpopo escaped suspect recaptured

Johannesburg - A man who escaped police custody in Thohoyandou two weeks ago has been rearrested, Limpopo police said on Monday.

He fled from custody dressed in a police uniform which he had stolen from a steel cabinet used to store uniforms for court orderlies, police spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

The man faced charges of rape, burglary, assault, and murder.

"He is now under police guard at a hospital after he was severely assaulted by community members who responded to a call by two women who he allegedly attempted to rape at Mvudi Park in Muledane on Saturday morning," said Mulaudzi.

The man would face further charges, of attempted rape and escaping from lawful police custody, at his next court appearance.

An internal investigation was under way into the officer whose uniform the escapee took.
