Man arrested in Fourways shoot-out

Johannesburg - A man has been arrested for attempted murder during a shoot-out with police in Fourways, Johannesburg, on Thursday morning, Gauteng police said.

The shoot-out happened on Witkoppen and Main roads while police were chasing a Honda Jazz they suspected was stolen, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

The car was spotted in Randburg and it sped off when police tried to stop it. The two men inside the vehicle allegedly fired shots at police, who returned fire.

The driver was shot and wounded and taken to hospital. The passenger was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder. No firearms were found in the car.

The police members involved in the shooting were unharmed.

"On further investigation, it was established that the vehicle had not been stolen and belongs to a vehicle dealership company," Dlamini said.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate would investigate.
