Johannesburg - A Johannesburg metro police officer was arrested for soliciting a bribe from a female motorist he stopped in Fourways, north of Johannesburg on Saturday morning.
"At about 03:00, the corrupt officer stopped the female driver and established that she had consumed alcohol," spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.
"He instructed her to withdraw money from an ATM. She withdrew R90 and then went to complain at the Douglasdale police, who photographed the cash and watched her from a distance handing it over to the officer."
Minnaar said the 43-year-old man was immediately arrested. He is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of corruption.
The internal affairs of the Johannesburg metro police department (JMPD) has also launched an investigation.
Minnaar said people should call the JMPD corruption hotline if they get pulled over and asked for a bribe by officers.
