Mahikeng - Government officials are assessing the damage from Tuesday's 5.5 magnitude earthquake in Orkney, as residents fear further aftershocks.

Eyewitness News reported on Wednesday that officials are visiting affected areas and are assisting those who have been affected by the quake. Hundreds of families were taken to a place of safety after their homes were damaged. According to Sapa, at least 400 houses were destroyed.
Disaster management officials spent the night helping residents move their belongings from damaged homes.
Emergency services have been placed on high alert amid concerns that potential aftershocks will be felt in the coming days. Residents were shaken by an aftershock on Tuesday evening.
The earthquake hit shortly after noon on Tuesday. One man was killed when a wall collapsed on him.
Sapa reported that three clinics in Klerksdorp were damaged and two have been shut down, with the third being repaired and expected to reopen on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Council for Geoscience said the quake was probably not related to mining in the area, according to EWN.
